Kenny asked: In other words, say an internet forum owner who lives in Chesapeake, VA decides to take advertising money, from online gambling sites deemed illegal by the US Justice Dept.
Wouldn’t his profiting from those illegal gambling sites be breaking some federal laws?
It is illegal now for an offshore gambling site to do business with US residents. So, wouldn’t it also be illegal for a US resident to be profiting from the promotion of those illegal sites, to US citizens who post on his forum?

gouramiperson asked: The world is moving at a much faster pace than the lawmakers may have anticipated. A lot of the legislation we have regarding internet practices is insufficient. People can gamble online, they can harass others, they can commit fraud, they can pose as someone else, they can do so many things and noone really cares because “it’s just the internet.” Is it wrong for me to believe that any activity that occurs within the jurisdiction of any country should be dealt with equally and accordingly, whether it is online, or otherwise? And should there not be greater restrictions on the content that we are able to access from other countries? Theoretically, foreign websites are not subject to the United States’ Freedom of Speech (or any other Constitutional rights). Also, I think it is unfair that a large number of websites relinquish any kind of accountability for misconduct that occurs on their sites by making people agree to their terms of use.
Also, people can argue about how what they do online is a matter of privacy, but once you post information on a global forum (the internet), it becomes public…….Do these people have any right to argue privacy?

lingt69 asked: The act was passed Saturday, Sep 30. It prohibits online gambling by placing criminal sanctions on financial institutions and banks if they fund an entity involved in “illegal gambling” operations. Some things such as horseracing and fantasy sports have been carved out/excluded from the definition of illegal gambling, but common games such as poker and blackjack are hit.
I will admit my bias and say that this legislation is crap. The government should not be telling us what we can and cannot do with our own money. They say it’s to protect the children and to stop gambling addictions… there are many other less restrictive yet more effective means to protect children from gambling websites such as universal age-verification accounts (which could be implemented if the government looked into regulation instead of prohibition). As for addicts…. I’ve never heard an addict complain that he couldn’t find a place to gamble his money away. Taking this away doesn’t help the addiction
